Bridge construction

With regards to bridge construction FDN has build up a lot of experience
through the years. Some of our experience includes: steel bridges, movable
steel bridges, prefabricated and cast in situ concrete bridges and railway
bridges.

Bridge High Speed Railway Line Amsterdam-Paris
FDN has been extensively involved in the preparations for the bridge over
the Hollandsch Deep River, which is the longest and most talked about
bridge on the entire high-speed train line within Holland. FDN has
participated not only in the drafting of preliminary designs and
specifications of the bridge, but was also responsible for an in-depth
risk analysis on ship collision, traveller comfort as well as a
3-dimensional analysis on the effects of ship collision on the different
pier foundation designs. The bridge, which construction finished in 2008,
has allowed FDN to acquire precious experience in all aspects of bridge
design.

Highway A10 Bos & Lommer viaduct
In assignment of the Municipality Engineering firm 2000-2001 FDN was responsible for the engineering of the viaduct over the A10 highway in Amsterdam. The design concerned a new viaduct between the two existing viaducts over the highway A10, for which a part of the existing viaducts had to be demolished. The building time and phases were crucial as the highway could not be closed for long periods.

Some of the requirements were:

  • the public transport (tram and bus) on the Bos & Lommer road was not to be disturbed
  • the traffic on the A10 highway should not be impeded unnecessarily
  • the method of placement of the foundation piles should not have any negative effect on the existing foundation
  • during the casting of the concrete of the middle pillar, highway traffic would be moving just next to it
  • strength reduction of the concrete caused by vibrations had to be avoided

Other Projects
For the design of the project Highspeed trainline South-Holland-South alone, FDN has delivered 35.000 hours of design work for the projectorganisation and for the contractor combinations. By doing this our engineers have developed an enormous amount of knowledge in infrastructure design and we have positioned our organisation as specialists in infrastructure design in the Netherlands.

The structural engineers of FDN are able to make use of the newest FE
modelling software during the design process in order to achieve a safe
and high quality structure that satisfies all the requirements of the
client.
